Meet Hasbro's Peteena, the Poodle in a Bikini

Greetings from the world of Peteena the Pampered Poodle!
She was born in 1966, a radical new doll produced by Hasbro, Inc.
Sadly, she was discontinued that same year.

Hasbro seemed to think they had a sure-fire hit on their hands; a character that would appeal to girls because of her trendy, cutting-edge fashion sense as well as her adventurous spirit.  She skis!  She dances!  She has smashing rain gear!  She is a student... perhaps in Paris!

On top of all that, she was the world's first anthropomorphic animal fashion doll.

But as with so many dolls that were ahead of their time (think: Blythe, Susie Sad Eyes, Kamar girls), she didn't catch on in a big way until long after her launch proved less than fruitful, and further production was cancelled.  "Peteena the Pampered Poodle" – also known as "Peteena the Poodle in a Bikini" because she was sold wearing a bikini beach outfit – has become a highly desirable vintage doll, sought by many doll collectors around the globe with a taste for the off-beat.

To quote the back panel of Peteena's box, "This Pampered Poodle wheels right in with the new look—strong and outspoken! a bit on the wild side!"  Stay tuned for a future post doing into more detail about each costume.
